Using IoT to prevent mining explosions
Firematic's vehicle fire suppression systems are designed to give peace of mind to drivers and businesses alike. Partnered with Trinity, Firematic was able to drive down their scheduled maintenance costs, increase the safety of their clients drivers/operators, and improve the overall efficiency of their equipment. To do this, they used carefully selected IoT devices that report vital fire suppression system data to the Trinity Connect platform in real-time.
Firematic has deployed over 46 TRB141 modems to date, with plans for further expansion in the near future.
The Need
Firematic's fire suppression system is pre-engineered with a dry powder and foam combo fire suppression system. Their system is installed on high-value mining trucks, offering complete automatic fire detection & suppression.
Firematic's systems are installed with high-pressure nitrogen tanks. Firematic needed a way to remotely monitor these tank pressures to avoid setbacks and potential danger to drivers/operators. To do this, they needed:
- Industrial-grade GSM devices that could monitor the pressure transmitters of their nitrogen gas chambers and,
- A system to gather their data, display the data online in real-time & alert their client’s drivers and site engineers pressure status that are too low or high before it becomes a safety hazard. As well as notify drivers, site engineers and Firematic themselves of Fires System Activations to ensure emergency assistance is deployed.
The Solution
First, our development team collaborated with Firematic stakeholders to find the best holistic solution and most suitable hardware for their business needs.
We then tested and enrolled TRB Modems on the Trinity platform. This process included provisioning each modem with an m2m SIM, which provides 'always-on' connectivity via Trinity's managed APN.
Firematic now has instant access to the critical data of their nitrogen tanks. They can alert drivers when the pressure is too high or too low, monitor and adjust their maintenance schedules to reduce operating costs, while at the same time troubleshoot possible failures and inefficiencies - all remotely from the Trinity Connect Platform.
